What is Memory Care? What is Alzheimer’s Care? Communities providing senior housing and care to seniors with memory impairments may refer to themselves by a few different names such as Alzheimers’ Care, Dementia Care or Memory Care.

To help seniors and their family caregivers, there is a growing trend toward specialized housing often referred to as Memory Care communities. Staff is trained in the issues of dementia, memory loss, Alzheimer’s Disease, and how to properly assist seniors from early to advanced stages of dementia. These communities provide assistance with Activities of Daily Living much like Assisted Living communities do. Physical structures are specially designed to include color-coded hallways and secure paths for wondering. Communities may be just for seniors with memory impairments or, they may be part of an Assisted Living community, a Skilled Nursing Community, or a part of a Continuing Care Retirement Community.

How do I pay for Memory Care and Alzheimer’s Care? Financial Assistance such as Medicaid varies from state to state so ask your community for specifics. Veterans Benefits may be available but they take time to obtain; if you have long-term care insurance it may also cover some of your daily costs.
