Obtaining Veteran Benefits
For eligible Veterans or their spouses requiring assistance with Activities of Daily Living (“ADLs”), benefits may be available to help pay for Assisted Living. The Veteran Aid & Attendance Benefit (“A&A”) eligibility is based on military service, living and financial, needs. Benefits take time to obtain and you need to be very careful whom you rely on for help. You or your loved one may be eligible for the Aid & Attendance benefit if criteria related to (1) Military Service, (2) Health needs and (3) Income and Asset maximums, are met:
- Military Service: Served at least 90 days of active duty of which at least 1 day was during a period of war;
- Health Needs: Must need assistance with Activities of Daily Living (“ADLs”) such as bathing, medication management, cooking; if they are legally blind; have a diagnosis of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease; have a need for a protected environment;
- Income and Assets: This benefit is for veterans most in need. Therefore, only those whose income and assets are below a certain level as determined by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
