How do I learn more about Veteran’s Pension Benefits?

The United States Department of Veterans Affairs provides useful information for those who wish to learn more about the Veterans Pension Program. On the VA website you can find out who is eligible. There are pension benefits for the veteran and for the surviving spouse and dependent children of the veteran. They also provide online editable PDF applications for the veteran and surviving spouse and dependent children. You will need Adobe Acrobat reader for the applications which is free at the Adobe website. Here is a list of VA Regional Offices and the VA's national phone number is 1-800-827-1000.

Are you a wartime veteran or the spouse of one and in need of assistance with activities of daily living? Are you currently living in a Senior Living community or thinking of moving into one? If so, you may be eligible to receive a significant monthly income from the Department of Veterans Affairs through a program called the Aid and Attendance Pension. Sadly, most veterans and their families are not aware of this benefit and therefore believe they cannot afford the care they need or are forced to move to Medicaid facilities when their money runs out. Like any government program, you must take the initiative to apply and the application process is not simply explained. Minor mistakes on the application or omission of any of the necessary supporting documents can cause delays or even rejection of benefits.

To be eligible, the veteran must have served a minimum of 90 days active duty, with at least one day during a wartime period. Below is a breakdown of the maximum monthly benefit amounts for 2015:

  • Veteran Without Dependent: $1,788
  • Veteran With One Dependent: $2,120
  • Surviving Spouse of a Veteran: $1,149
  • Improved Pension Only: $1,404
  • Two Married Veterans: $2,837

Here is how it works: Mr. Jones is a single veteran who moves into a Brookdale Senior Living community because he has severe macular degeneration. His monthly income is $1,400 in Social Security, $350 in Pension and he spends $3,000 for Assisted Living. The VA will calculate Mr. Jones’ net income after medical expenses to be $0 - therefore he is entitled to the maximum benefit of $1,788 per month. If his income is higher than assisted living expenses, Mr. Jones may be entitled to a partial payment. All of this income is tax-free!

If you do not like the offers you are receiving, we can help you locate additional companies in order to help you evaluate whether the offers you are receiving are competitive from a fair market value standpoint.

Can you tell me a little more about what Elderlife’s Life Insurance Products can do for me?

Many seniors reach a point where they can no longer afford the premium payments on their life insurance, after paying this premium for years and in some instances, decades. They reluctantly find themselves letting their insurance policies lapse, foregoing much if not all of their anticipated benefit. Other seniors find that the reason they took out the insurance policy, such as protecting their spouse or children in the event of unexpected and early death, is no longer a concern. The kids are grown, everyone is fine. And you may want to leverage your policy to enjoy life a little more.

There are options. Qualified policy holders can explore the option of selling their life insurance policy for an amount that may be greater than the policy’s cash surrender value but typically less than the anticipated benefit . That is often referred to as a “life settlement”. Or, another option, could be to convert the benefit of your life insurance into a long-term care benefit. This is frequently referred to as a “Life Assurance” benefit. Elderlife is here to help you identify organizations that can explore these two possible options, as well as their pros and cons (and everything has pros and cons!).

Remember that one unique aspect of this line of credit is that several family members and support persons can apply for the line of credit together. If your community of choice is not currently signed up with our program, our Elderlife Advisor will contact the community to determine if the community you desire can participate in our program. Should your community decide not to register with our program, you can select another community participating in our program. We understand that selecting the right senior living community is an important decision. Elderlife strongly recommends you research and evaluate the community of your choice thoroughly.
